Your car is not just one big, complete piece. It is comprised of many smaller pieces, components, and systems that work together to keep your vehicle moving. With all of these components come materials that are hazardous to the environment, animals, and people when disposed of incorrectly. It is truly disturbing when you really stop to think about everything that is inside and on your car. It is even more so when you think about where these things end up when you just cast your old car aside.

Take oil for example. Your car needs oil to operate, and uses a considerable amount of it over the years. Just one litre of oil, however, can pollute up to one million times its volume of drinking water. You don't have to put the oil directly into the water supply to have the pollution make a serious impact. A discarded car leaks oil which sinks into the ground. This can contaminate the ground water and nearby water supplies.  Coolant, gasoline, and other fluids within the car can likewise pollute water supplies and the soil, and can also create toxic gasses that make a serious impact on the environment. All of these fluids should be carefully considered when disposing of an unwanted car.

Another issue when it comes to the disposal of your car is the tyres. Every year, as many as 17 million tyres are disposed of throughout Australia. This is a truly staggering amount of rubber, metal, and other components that are simply tossed away. This can lead to fires, water pollution, and other problems.

Recycling your old vehicle is the only way to ensure all of the potentially hazardous materials in your car are disposed of safely. The materials will be captured appropriately, recycled when possible, or disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
